About

Rhona McCallum in studio hammering wedding ring on mandrel

Inspired by geology, ancient history and our changing landscapes, Rhona McCallum creates statement collections of jewellery in silver and gold that combine rugged, natural textures with bold, sculptural forms.

Forged and carved lines run through the pieces, accentuated by flashes of gold, referencing geological fractures and lines and layers in stone.

Rhona’s award winning jewellery is made by hand in her studio in Glasgow, Scotland, and has been exhibited around the world, including the prestigious Goldsmiths’ Fair and Collect in London, and New York’s Museum of Arts and Design. She graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with an MA in Jewellery Design in 2013.

Developed from her signature style, Rhona also creates unique, textured wedding rings in recycled and Single Mine Origin gold.

Sustainability

When I was a student I was devastated to learn about the environmental impact of precious metal mining, and how difficult it was to source ethical materials. It is great that in recent years this has changed significantly. I am continuing to learn about new developments in ethical metals and gemstones and I am excited to work with new suppliers who are striving to reduce the environmental and social impacts of their materials.

As standard I offer recycled silver, and both recycled and Single Mine Origin (SMO) gold. The keumboo (24ct gold foil) I use in my work is 100% recycled from jewellery, medical and electrical waste.

The gemstones I source are responsibly mined and fully traceable. I work with ethical suppliers to ensure that everyone in the supply chain, from miner to cutter, are fairly paid, and that the environmental impact is kept to a minimum. I can also reuse existing gemstones you may already have and remodel them into new pieces of jewellery.

My jewellery is made by hand in my studio in Glasgow, using metal and gemstones from trusted UK suppliers. All metal in my studio is used responsibly and as much waste is refined and recycled as possible.

Keumboo

Keumboo is a traditional Korean gilding technique where a fine layer of 24ct gold is fused to the surface of silver. It’s around 25 times thicker than gold leaf and so it is a more robust and hard wearing method of adding gold detail. I use it to highlight and enhance the hammered lines and textures in my pieces.

In 2010, while studying at Edinburgh College of Art, I was very lucky to spend a semester as an exchange student at Kookmin University in Seoul, South Korea. It was a life changing experience and still influences my work to this day.

Look for the Hallmark, It's Your Guarantee. In the UK it is illegal to supply or offer to supply any item as Gold, Silver, Platinum or Palladium unless it is hallmarked.
